What We Learn From BSB Songs: Incomplete

BSB-incomplete-screenshots-the-backstreet-boys-14965516-640-360Remember when Incomplete came out? I do. I remember it being like a glass of water after a Backstreet drought longer than any we’d ever seen before, and longer than we’ve ever seen since. I would’ve loved it even if was the Boys singing the ABCs. Thankfully the song was a lot more mature and advanced than that.

Still…the lesson in this song is an interesting one. Let’s begin!

Empty spaces fill me up with holes
Distant faces with no place left to go
Without you within me I can’t find no rest
Where I’m going is anybody’s guess

1. Empty spaces fill you up with holes? I’m not sure this is possible. In fact I’m pretty sure you have it backwards. Holes fill you up with empty spaces. Okay?

2. Who are the distant faces? And how do you know they have nowhere to go?

3. Um…how can a girl be within you? Not anatomically possible! (Unless you’re talking about a guy. If so, rock on with your bad self.)

4. We can’t know where you’re going unless you do. So, you’re not wrong.

I tried to go on like I never knew you
I’m awake but my world is half asleep
I pray for this heart to be unbroken
But without you all I’m going to be is incomplete

5. When you’re awake, the world is half asleep? Does that mean the entire population is? Hmm. I suspect Evil Villain technology here.

6. Aww, you’re incomplete without me? That’s sweet!

Voices tell me I should carry on
But I am swimming in an ocean all alone
Baby, my baby
It’s written on your face
You still wonder if we made a big mistake

7. Now I’m officially scared. If you’re hearing voices, go see a doctor. That’s not normal, okay. THAT IS NOT NORMAL! Especially if you’re in an ocean all alone!

8. Shit, I have a bad poker face. If you’re telling us you hear voices talking to you, yes I’m gonna wonder if this is a mistake. (We should run.)

I’d try to go on like I never knew you
I’m awake but my world is half asleep
I pray for this heart to be unbroken
But without you all I’m going to be is incomplete

9. No amount of sweet words are going to help undo the knowledge you’re crazy. Wait, is this song even to me?

I don’t mean to drag it on, but I can’t seem to let you go
I don’t wanna make you face this world alone
I wanna let you go (alone)

10. Um, are you sure this is about me being alone and not you?

11. How can you want to let me go and not want me to be alone? I’m confused!

I’d try to go on like I never knew you
I’m awake but my world is half asleep
I pray for this heart to be unbroken
But without you all I’m going to be is incomplete
Incomplete

12. If you’re incomplete, maybe go to a doctor and find that missing piece. It could be your sanity.

13. NO I GOT IT! The song isn’t to me at all! It’s to one of the other personalities! They have multiple personalities! It explains everything!

The Overall Lesson:
So in this song we learn that the Boys are definitely schizophrenic if they’re hearing voices in their heads telling them what to do. What that is, I don’t think we want to know. On top of it, looks like we got some multiple personalities. Maybe that explains all the nicknames they had over the years? On the upside, it does explain why they’re so okay with dating a mass murder as we learned from As Long As You Love MeBoys, go get checked out. Hearing voices is never a good sign, even if you were wizards (as we learned in Harry Potter).

  1. Lol at #3. It reminds of me of back in the day when AJ tried to explain that “Lay Down Beside Me” wasn’t sexual just because a girl couldn’t go inside of him. Puh-lease, younger AJ. He couldn’t fool even the most naïve fans. But like you said, I supposed it’d make literal sense in either song if it was about two guys. 😉
Ah, multiple personalities, that explains it. I guess Johnny No-Name flew his ass back to London, or Nashville, or wherever he came from… Though, I’d hope we’ll see plenty more of Mr. Body Beautiful.
