What We Learn From BSB Songs – The Call

Welcome to another What We Learn From… post! Where the game’s made up and the points don’t matter! Ha. Kidding. I’ll be over here with my nineties references. For those who may not have read these posts before or could possibly be newer to the blog, this is a series of humor posts I’ve done since the year I created the blog. Basically it’s where while I love the Boys and do many posts that takes music seriously, these are the ones where I take the lyrics far too literally and form little nuggets of knowledge from them. Today’s post? The Call!

I’m going with the Neptunes Remix on this one. Why? Because the beat is stuck in my head. I mean when was the last time you guys listened to this version of the song? It’s catchy as hell. And I love The Call but no lie, this version gets me dancing all around my apartment. I’ll link a video for you to stream as we go and let’s get rolling!

Let’s party
Imagine the Backstreet Boys here with the Neptunes
Call it the rec room, play time now, holla
Pusha be one if you follow, slo’ mow, low-low
Thousand spoke on the gold Impala
Crushin’, love my women in couples (what)
One on each arm, keep double the trouble (yeah)
So I gotta, shift ’em and shuffle, love how I twist ’em and tussle
Sex play, next day, call me, uh

1  Okay I’ve never looked closely at the remix lyrics and now I’m glad I have. What a way to start. Let’s party! (let’s have a paaaaarty…wait, no wrong song!)

2. How many people actually had a rec room in the year 2000? I’m curious.

3. Damn, this goes a lot harder on the cheating aspect with the rap.  Also, love my women in couples? We’re not socks!

4. What does a gold Impala have to do with all this?

5. Shift them and shuffle? First women were socks and now we’re a deck of cards.

Let me tell you the story about the call that changed my destiny
Me and my boys went out just to end up in misery
Was about to go home when there she was standing in front of me
And said, “Hi, I got a little place nearby, wanna go?”
I should’ve said no, someone’s waiting for me
But I called my girl up and said…

6. The call that got Brian to join the group? No? Shit.

7. Wow, sounds like a rough night. I mean, who says misery anymore?

8. Damn right you should’ve said no! Shame on you Backstreet Boys…SHAME.

9. The reason why this song was such a big deal was because it’s about the Boys cheating. Bad message. Bad lessons. But it doesn’t negate the fact this song is a jam.

“Listen, baby, I’m sorry, just wanna tell ya don’t worry
I will be late, don’t stay up and wait for me”
“Say again? You’re dropping out, my battery is low
Just so you know, we’re going to a place nearby, gotta go!”

10. Are you sorry though? ARE YOU?

11. Even in 2020, low batteries and bad signals are real problems. Do better phone companies.

12. Gotta go! A phrase that will love on forever in Backstreet. FOR-EV-ER.

Now two years gone, nothing’s been won
I can’t take it back, what’s done is done
One of her friends found out that she wasn’t my only one
And it eats me from inside that she’s not by my side
Just because I made that call and lied

13. Two years? Why have I never noticed that? What happened in those two years? That’s a huge time jump.

14. Did someone get snapped by Thanos?

15. What a good friend to tell her that her man is cheating on her.

16. It should eat you up inside, you cheated and you lied…it’s not the lie. It’s the cheating!

17. Actually it’s probably both.

“Listen, baby, I’m sorry, just wanna tell ya don’t worry
I will be late, don’t stay up and wait for me”
“Say again? You’re dropping out, my battery is low
Just so you know, we’re going to a place nearby, gotta go!”

18. Shouldn’t have done it. Have ALL THE regrets.

Hello? Listen baby I’m sorry
Dance
Hello? Listen baby I’m sorry

Don’t stay up and wait
‘Cause I’ma be somewhere late
I feel for ya if you can’t relate
I take it aways, like two day stays
But look, still hit me on my two-way page
See, I’m heavy in the streets like a cream Denali (uh)
Cold outside? We take trips to Maui (c’mon)
AJ, Brian, Kevin, Nick and Howie (what)
Accompanied by Clipse; Pusha T and Mali

19. This song gets more heartless when you include the rap.

20. You feel for me if you can’t relate? Geeze.

21. Page…ha. Is he referring to pagers? Or is he trying to use another word for texting?

22. Okay it’s really cold right now, I’m gonna go with y’all to Maui. Suddenly not caring about the cheating. And the lying. Wait, are you lying now?

23. AJ, Brian, Kevin, Nick and Howie! Yes I sang that out loud as I typed this.

Let me tell you the story about the call that changed my destiny
Me and my boys went out just to end up in misery
Was about to go home when there she was standing there in front of me
And said, “Hi, I got a little place nearby”
(Gotta go)

“Listen, baby, I’m sorry, just wanna tell ya don’t worry
I will be late, don’t stay up and wait for me”
“Say again? You’re dropping out, my battery is low
Just so you know, we’re going to a place nearby, gotta go!”
“Listen, baby, I’m sorry, just wanna tell ya don’t worry
I will be late, don’t stay up and wait for me”
“Say again? You’re dropping out, my battery is low
Just so you know, we’re going to a place nearby, gotta go!”

24. Wait, how many times did you tell her this? Your battery can’t have been that dead if you said it this much.

25. This song wouldn’t manage as well in 2020. Not everyone in 2000 had a cell phone so if yours died you may not be able to just borrow one. Today? I guarantee you could call her back.

26. Also if you’re all out together Boys, I know you ALL had cell phones. Wait, that means you could’ve borrowed one of the others!

27. So many bad decisions and excuses wrapped up in one very delightfully fun to listen to song.

We’re going to a place nearby
We’re going to a place nearby, gotta go
We’re going to a place nearby
We’re going to a place nearby, gotta go
(Say what?)
We’re going to a place nearby (Say what?)
We’re going to a place nearby (Say what?)
Gotta go (Gotta go!)
Hello?
Hello?

Haha, yeah
Let’s party, know why?
We’re going to a place nearby
We’re going to a place nearby
I gotta go, girl

29. Let’s party! Why? Because we’re off to go cheating!

30. Man…this song is something else as a remix. I love it.

Overall Lesson: The lesson is supposed to be don’t ever cheat on your girlfriend or boyfriend. That’s what it’s SUPPOSED to be. However, you’re supposed to go by the song lyrics in these. Given how the remix switches things up a bit…I guess the lesson is…Let’s Party! Off to cheat! Then you know, have all sorts of regrets later. At least they have regrets! That ends up lasting for two years! So I suppose that’s something…right? Okay probably not. But they’ll have dozens more songs apologizing to make up for it.

Gotta Go!
